I was in almost the exact same situation as the one David Ludwig was facing. I was the newly-legal boyfriend of the the mid-teen girl. We also had a secret, sexual relationship that, when discovered, resulted in my being forbidden from seeing her. When you are seventeen or eighteen years old, it is the end of your world.

Fortunately enough for me, I did not grow up around (nor have access to) a large cache of weapons because at that age, lacking the decision-making ability I possess now, who knows how it would have turned out. Instead, she just snuck out to see me every time the opportunity presented itself. It softened the blow tremendously.

This isn’t meant to condone the taking of Kara Borden’s parents’ lives. That is inexcusable. I am extremely thankful I didn’t resort to something stupid like that in my own life. We rode it out and on the morning of her eighteenth birthday, she packed up what was left of her things and left home while her mother was at work. It was both scary and exciting.

That was thirteen years ago this past September.
